Tonner Doll's It's About Time Convention Recap

Victorian Ice Cream Social Jon
Victorian Ice Cream Social Cami
Victorian Ice Cream Social Matt
These three dolls made up the Victorian Ice cream social centerpiece.

Cinderella centerpiece from the Once Upon A Time breakfast LE150 Kay head sculpt

Lady Action Centerpiece - LE250 - this looks like a Tyler 2.0 face to me.
Victorian Basic - Cami head sculpt

Banquet centerpiece - Milady LE100 - American Model with inset eyes
NY Times Centerpiece - 15th Anniversary Tyler LE300 - Tyler 1.0 on the Chic Body
Renaissance souvenir - Lady Arabella Bertran LE300 (Deja Vu)

Some news:

I'm not sure if this is from the convention, but directly from Tonner's Facebook page:

In case you missed it, some incredible news about Tonner Doll and The Wizard of Oz!
The Leading Ladies of The Wizard of Oz are transforming the Yellow Brick Road into a fashion runway! High-end fashion and costume designers have partnered with Warner Bros. and Tonner Doll to create one-of-a-kind creations inspired by Dorothy, Glinda the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West.

The dolls will be available for auction on eBay – with ALL proceeds benefiting Habitat for Humanity! Learn more about the collection here:http://www.thewizardofozblog.com/ #WizardofOz75
The Anniversary Tyler doll was released with a new body called the Chic body. You can see some improvements on Tonner's Facebook page here, and I don't believe you have to have an account on Facebook just to see the photos. (If you have problems viewing the link, leave me a note in the comments section.) I'm really excited about any body change, actually. I'm hoping this means Tyler's knees will be like Antoinette's now--it seems it might be!

There was also an event launching a brand new collection inspired by Carmen Dell'Orfice. There are some amazing photos on Tonner's blog, taken by Ernesto Padro-Campos on there that I just couldn't copy to my blog, so please check them out here. I believe the first doll was available as a centerpiece LE200, and she is gorgeous.

BNB Dolls at the KBJD Show

BNB Dolls

BNB Dolls was a new company to me, introduced at the Korean BJD Show in LA this past weekend. They had some great deals on clothing. The outfits above were sold for about $50-65 per set.

The owner, Nornan, did a fantastic face-up class and demonstration. The "basic" make-up was really amazing. It takes her three hours to complete a basic style make-up for her boys--when she is simply copying a pretty basic style. For OOAK looks, or when she is creating a new make-up style, it can be up to a week to get the look just right!

As far as that goes, after watching her amazing technique, I'll continue paying the bargain price of $40-80 per face. I had no idea it took so much time!

You can see the rest of the dolls here, and a link to steps 1-4 of the make-up class on my Flickr photo stream.

Are doll conventions worth attending?

Force of Nature Agnes

Most definitely! I'm sure you wouldn't expect any other answer from the Fashion Doll Review. Why should you attend a convention, and which one should you attend? First and foremost:

Attend the convention of the company whose dolls you love the most.

There's no question. If you aren't a big Barbie fan, don't attend that convention, even if you think you might be able to make a profit. Even if the Integrity Toys convention is on the opposite coast, if those are your favorite dolls, attend! Have you heard that Tonner's convention dolls don't sell for double the price, unlike some convention dolls? That's OK--if Tonner is your favorite company, go anyway!

You'll be sure to find collectors of like mind, and you'll enjoy yourself and the dolls. That's the most important part of a convention, anyway.

What if you collect many types of dolls? I'd suggest a convention like IFDC or MDCC, where several different doll manufacturers are represented.
  • Barbie convention usually registers close to 800 attendees. This is a fairly large convention. In addition to room shopping, count on the sales room--public day--being a bit crazy. If you like lots of people, this convention is for you. The shopping alone is worth it! Surprisingly to me, these are usually hosted by and put on by the local doll group, and sponsored by dealers, vendors, and Mattel, but not actually hosted by Mattel, so they are different and unique each year. It makes them fun, entertaining, and exciting!
  • Tonner Doll convention is a bit more intimate - usually less than 300 attendees, and closer to 250. It's fun, and the pace is a little more reasonable. There seemed to be a lot of cliques at this convention--though it might just be where I was sitting (or that my hair was purple at the time). The staff is amazing. I really enjoyed getting to know them!
  • Integrity Toys convention is usually limited to around 500 attendees--I found it way more low key than I expected, especially for the number of attendees. So many more people were just happy to spend time talking dolls rather than cutting in line. I was shocked and delighted. If you'd like to get to talk to some doll designers, come to this convention! The food was to die for at this event.
  • IFDC is limited to 250 people, and it's the most affordable convention of them all. It's atmosphere is really fun and laid back. I really enjoy this convention because of how friendly the people who attend are--though again, since so many people already know each other, it can be off-putting at first. The raffle room is really amazing at this event, and the workshops are terrific. Dress up and put yourself out there!
  • European doll conventions, such as the Paris Fashion Doll Festival, the Italian Doll Convention in Milan, and the Madrid Fashion Doll Show are amazing opportunities for shopping and have fantastic convention dolls. I would love to attend one of these someday. I've had a friend attend the convention in Milan, and it was one of the best doll experiences she's had so far. For me, it would be a dream come true! They are usually quite small--limited to around 100 attendees--which makes them quite intimate and wonderful, and you'll be able to find some amazing treasures.
  • MDCC is limited to 200 and I haven't (yet) attended this event. It's very affordable, and what's really cool is that it changes locations every year, so sometime it's going to be close to you. Also, you know what is included in your registration fee, and now, you can "Bring a Buddy," which allows you to bring a friend who doesn't really want the convention doll. The breakout events feature amazing OOAK artists and exclusive dolls, and those are available on an individual basis. I've heard that you can usually see the doll before you buy it, also, which is a plus.
  • Local BJD Conventions--If there is a BJD Convention on your coast or in your state, and you're at all interested in these amazing dolls, do whatever you can to attend. These are really great ways to see lots of dolls in person, plus you can save a lot of money on shipping if you plan to buy a doll. Of course, don't forget to save money up front, since you'll want to save in advance. Sometimes these conventions will have vendors who accept trades for their products as well, which you usually won't find anywhere else--I attended one convention where I saw this, and had never seen this before. It's fantastic!
  • UFDC also puts on a yearly convention. 2014 will be in San Antonio, TX. I've never attended the convention, but I have been to the sales room, which was huge.
What if you're not overly fond of large groups of people? Start out small--and try IFDC or a local BJD Convention first.

San Diego Comic-Con 2014 update

SDCC has updated some policies to the 2014 Comic Con, including some rather important details regarding registration on their website. Read it for all the details, but here's what I've gathered:

  • If you attended last year and still have your 2013 badge, you can participate in 2014 badge preregistration. If you're eligible, you'll be notified via email 48 hours before the pre-reg starts.
  • Open online registration for the general public (including professionals and guests, exhibitors, volunteers, staff, and press) will happen at a later date.
  • Only single-day passes will be sold in 2014, and you can only purchase the preview night (Thursday) if you purchase Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday badges.
  • When you preregister, you can register for up to three people, including yourself, as long as each person has his or her own eligible member ID.
  • Prices have increased, I have heard, over last year. Thursday, Friday and Saturday are $45 for adults, Sunday is $30, and preview night is $30. (Discounts are available for juniors, seniors and military, plus kids under 12 are free with a paying adult.)
See all the info for yourself on the SDCC website.

Madame Alexander update!

This, directly from Mark & Sharlene Aschauer, of Two Daydreamers, regarding the Madame Alexander unveiling in San Francisco:

Madame Alexander Doll Club
2013 California Premier - Let's Go to the Movies

February 16th - February 17th
Hilton San Francisco Airport Bayfront
Dear Madame Alexander Doll Collector:
As we're only a few weeks away from the MADC California Premier we wanted to give you an update.    When we look at the list of registrants we are excited both to see many old friends and a lot of new names have registered for the San Francisco Premier.  Our videos and movies are ready to go, our guest speaker is confirmed, a red carpet has been arranged for all of the stars attending Premier, we'll be showing the 2013 Madame Alexander collection and sending you home with catalogs, we've got some exciting games to play, some fun door prizes, a great raffle and some unexpected  surprises lined up.  Now we are looking forward to seeing everyone at Lunch on February 16th.  The California Premier promises to be a fun party!
Break Out Events - Running Out of Time
In the past, sign-up for break-out events were included on the registration form.  This year, there was a delay receiving the cost of both the Cissette souvenir and centerpiece dolls which prevented these two events from being on the main registration form.  As you know, sign-ups for the Cissette Event and the afternoon Centerpiece Event were sent out after the MADC office received your event registration.  This has caused some confusion and delays.  We're worried this may prevent some attendees from being signed up in time for the two breakout events.  If you're attending the California Premiere and want to attend either/both the breakout events, complete your registration now.  In case you haven't received the form from the MADC office yet, let us know and we'll e-mail it to you.  You'll need to mail it back to NYC ASAP.  Also, please e-mail us to let us know that you have paid and signed up for one or both events so we can reserve the space, a souvenir and arrange a meal for you.
As indicated in your registration package the fastest way to return your break out event registration is to mail it to Melissa at the new Alexander Doll offices:
MADC
Attn: Melissa
112 W 34th Street
Suite 1207
New York, New York  10120
Raffle Donations -

There has also been some confusion about donating dolls for the raffle.  Yes, you can bring the item with you.  If you intend to do this rather than mailing it ahead of time, PLEASE e-mail us the name of the item that you're bringing so we can prepare a donation card mentioning your generosity with the name of the item and guesstimate the space we'll need.  Many people have written to say that they're bringing an item but to date nobody has written us what they're bringing.  Please e-mail either Sharlene or Mark.
Volunteers -

There wasn't any space on the registration form this year to mark if you're interested in volunteering to help at Premier.  We still need help with table hostesses, registration, raffle ticket sales, help setting up, etc.  Please let us know if you're interested.  Sharlene is coordinating this.
Special Meals-
Last week we met with the catering service at the hotel and we are confident that everyone will enjoy the wonderful menu.  The deserts look terrific.  We have also made arrangements to provide vegetarian meals to anyone requesting this option.  There is no additional cost for this option.  If you are interested in vegetarian meals please let either Sharlene or Mark know and we'll make arrangements prior to the Premier.  We can tell you that the vegetarian options from the hotel sound delicious.
Hotel Reservations -
This is really urgent.  The last day for making hotel reservations using the club discount and the parking discount is January 25th.  The 25th is this Friday!!  The easiest way to make your hotel reservations is to call Hilton Reservations at 1-800-HILTONS.  The discount is available for the nights of February 15th and February 16th.  When making your reservation the operator will need to know that the MADC event is at the Hilton San Francisco Airport Bayfront and that the name of our discount coupon is "Madame Alexander Doll Club."
As we have mentioned previously the club rate is $130.00 per night with single or double occupancy and the daily parking rate is $8.00 with in/out privileges.  We attended another doll event last weekend near to our hotel and the parking was $20.00 per day and the room rate was almost double our special rate.  We hope you will enjoy the Hilton.

Limited to 300 guests, Tonner Convention 2013 is themed Age of Innocence this year. The dates are Thursday May 16, 2013 through Sunday, May 19, 2013.

Here are the details, just in from the registration site:
Welcome to the gilt, glamour and intrigue of The Age of Innocence—the Tonner Doll Company 2013 Collector’s Convention!  We’ll explore times past both real and imaginary and from whimsical childlike innocence to sophisticated elegance.  This magical weekend begins on May 16th and will be filled with honest-to-goodness merriment--and you just may have the time of your life!
Robert Tonner and staff have packed this whirlwind weekend full of delightful fun.  We’ll visit candy land and Dr. Seuss; we’ll time travel to the Gatsby-esque elegance of the 1920’s and the swinging sixties, and meet in the grand ballroom for the enchanting Carousel Ball for dinner, dessert, and dancing!
And let’s not forget the Wilde side of things, where the absence of innocence prevails!  This year’s Wilde Imagination event is included with your Tonner Convention registration, and the dolls will be available for purchase.   Effanbee’s little sweetheart will be making an appearance too, resplendent in her wide-eyed glory, and she’s as innocent as a lamb!
Each attendee will receive two 16” fashion dolls, one being a splendid souvenir doll—one of the most exquisite to date!   We will also feature a tremendously stocked sales room, flourishing favors, an impressive OOAK Charity Auction, and the stupendous Raffle Room  at a new and improved time - This year, we will be holding the raffle BEFORE the Carousel Ball banquet, leaving MORE time for the banquet event!  In addition, registration includes 3 meal events and a dessert event!
The cost is $399 and $50 will reserve your seat. The convention will be held at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center (in Lombard, IL, outside of Chicago), and rooms are $139 per night.

Kickstarter event from St. Louis BJD Convention!

Press release from St. Louis BJD Convention:

Greetings, Fashion Doll enthusiasts!
We're so excited to be hosting the first annual St. Louis BJD Convention on November 17th, 2012! Many of our committee members are fashion doll collectors as well as Ball-Jointed Doll enthusiasts, and we're planning lots of activities that will appeal to Fashion Doll Fans! If you do not own any BJDs but love dolls, you will still enjoy what we have planned.
To raise funds for this event, we've launched a Kickstarter here:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jenrpa/st-louis-bjd-convention
Our convention is centrally located in the Gateway to the West. We have three amazing guests:
Paulette Goodreau www.americanbjd.com  www.mimtoy.comSarah Seiter, known as the Mushroom Peddler http://www.themushroompeddler.com/store/Alison Rasmussen, well-known to anyone who reads this blog!
We have a whole day of programming planned, plus a dealer's room, contests, workshops, discussion panels, and food. Your registration covers meals including the Awards Banquet with our guests. We are also planning a happy hour event on Friday the 16th at our official hotel, and a meet on Sunday to show off some of the awesome locations in the St. Louis area.
Kickstarter is a pledge drive where you pledge at any level that you choose. Minimum donation pledge is $1 but there are lots of levels and each is associated with a special gift created by our committee for our supporters. Even if you can't come to the convention, you can help support our efforts with your pledge.
If we meet our goal you get the gifts you have chosen, and are charged on September 1st for your pledge. Anyone who pledges to get their preregistration is guaranteed a spot and will be registered regardless. If we do not meet our goal you will receive information on how to arrange your payment.
We can make this event happen without the Kickstarter, but we wanted to promote through Kickstarter to try to raise additional funds that would otherwise be out-of-pocket for us. We also want to handle all of our pre-registration through the Kickstarter so that we can provide Sarah Seiter with an accurate number of dolls. She needs lead-time to produce the dolls and needs to know how many dolls to order well in advance. Sarah is providing us with a special doll following our "Year of the Dragon" sub-theme!
It's the last minute! Help support the first Midwestern BJD convention in the United States!

First ever JAMIEshow Convention!

JAMIEshow Premiere Convention
"Prohibition"
September 28-30, 2012
The Firehouse
Canandaigua, NY

This sounds like a really fabulous event for fashion doll and resin fashion BJD collectors alike. Registration is $475 and includes convention doll, events and workshops. Check out the website to register today (deadline and payment must be received by May 31, 2012).

Events include an opening breakfast, three workshops (photography by George G, repainting eyes and lips by PegFamousGirls, and styling doll wigs and hair by Michael Scott), all-day VIP shopping at Angelic Dreamz, a Sonnenberg Gardens cocktail reception (on the veranda of the mansion!), a trip to the Strong Museum of Art & Toy Hall of Fame, a Speakeasy costume event, and a closing brunch.

A special convention rate at The Inna on the Lake has been arranged (between $134-204 per night), including rooms, suites, and jacuzzi suites (!!!). Plus, there are lots of bed and breakfasts and hotels in Canandaigua. The closest airport is Rochester International.

I'm trying to figure out how I might be able to talk my husband into attending!
